Adidas's SPEED FACTORY has recently won the 2018 German Innovation Award, a big business category.

Since

Adidas

In 2015, the concept of speed factory was put forward. All aspects of plant construction, internal equipment, product production and manpower utilization were continuously concerned by the outside world.

As Adidas's bold move to "reshape the manufacturing industry", the speed plant not only bears the responsibility of producing products for Adidas's major global markets, but also

manufacturing industry

The self renovation of the world's second major sports brands is under the environment of technology and consumption habits.

By the end of 2015, Adidas's first speed plant was launched in Ansbacher, Germany.

According to reports, the plant area is about 4600 square meters, mainly for robot production, with only 160 technical jobs reserved.

In September 2016, the speed plant launched the first pair of sneakers: a super limited edition running shoes called Futurecraft M.F.G. (Made for Germany, made in Germany).

At the same time, Adidas announced the speed plant expansion news: second speed factories will come to Atlanta, the United States.

In October 2017, the speed plant launched its first official project series, AM4 (Adidas Made For).

This is Adidas's design and manufacturing project for running shoes in order to meet the needs of specific urban runners.

Adidas's global strategy will be the six major cities (London, Paris, Losangeles, New York, Tokyo, Shanghai) as the key market in the next few years, and the six cities will first enjoy the services of speed factories.

London and Paris ushered in their own AM4LDN and AM4PAR in 2017.

Custom shoes from New York, Losangeles, Tokyo and Shanghai will also be launched in 2018.

In Adidas's speed factory, a production unit has about 6 machines. It is divided into two production lines: one group makes sole and one group makes other parts of sports shoes.

It takes only 5 hours to complete a pair of shoes from start to production.

The extremely high degree of automation has enabled speed factories to get rid of traditional production methods that must be accepted by large orders.

Factories can respond flexibly to different market environments and emerging market trends, and achieve rapid operation and explore the possibility of deeper customization.

Therefore, Adidas's speed plant will not take the place of the brand's major manufacturing plants in Asia for a short time, nor will it undertake too many annual production tasks.

However, with the increase of labor costs in Asia, especially in the Chinese manufacturing industry, Adidas is facing more and more cost pressures. It has shifted more and more production to Southeast Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Kampuchea, Burma and Indonesia, which are much cheaper in terms of labor and raw materials.

Under this situation, the emergence of robotics and automation technology has enabled enterprises to see the future direction of the manufacturing industry.

In addition, another consideration for Adidas to put speed factories in Germany and the United States is to make the production end close to the consumer side.

Western Europe is Adidas's main base, and the United States is one of the fastest growing and most competitive markets in the world. Adidas is able to respond faster to its market changes and reduce the cost of logistics and storage by placing factories in these two markets.

It takes 18 months to develop a pair of sneakers from development to the final sale of a pair of shoes, but 18 months later, consumers are likely to "change their minds".

Adidas has said it will become the first "fast moving" brand, and speed factories will take the lead in this action.
